How it Works

Zinc nickel plating involves adding 12–15% (by weight) of nickel to the plating process. This enhances performance significantly compared with standard electroplated zinc or zinc-iron systems. Anochrome can meet most automotive specifications, including Ford S450, and with black passivation, SJ450b.

Benefits of Zinc Nickel Plating

Zinc nickel plating offers enhanced corrosion resistance – at least double that of zinc for the same thickness.

Other operational advantages include good temperature stability, with performance maintained at temperatures up to 120°C.

It offers excellent ductility and sacrificial protection as the coating can withstand cracks caused by metal movement.

Hydrogen embrittlement is also reduced, improving overall component reliability.

Plating Methods

Anochrome offers two primary methods of zinc nickel plating, tailored to the size and complexity of components.

Barrel Plating

The barrel process is ideal for small parts such as screws, fasteners, nuts, bolts, brake pipes, calipers and steering components. Items are placed in a perforated, non-conductive barrel and tumbled through a series of plating tanks.

This highly cost-effective method ensures even coverage and is widely used in the automotive sector. Additional top coats and torque-modifying solutions can be applied as part of the barrel plating process.

Rack Plating

Rack plating is suited for larger or more complex components. Parts are mounted on electrically conductive jigs or racks and submerged in plating solutions. While more labour-intensive, rack plating offers precise control over the coating process, making it ideal for specialised applications.

Anochrome is a leading job rack plating specialist in the UK, delivering consistent, high-quality results for demanding industrial requirements.

Specifications and Quality Assurance

Anochrome ensures all zinc nickel plating meets rigorous industry standards. Our processes deliver high-performance coatings that combine corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical durability, supporting both automotive and industrial applications.
