A ground-breaking zinc nickel corrosion protection technology that can deliver over 10,000 hours of salt spray protection is widely available in the UK for the first time.
The Anochrome Group has been granted an exclusive licence to apply NanoGalv® coatings to customer-supplied components in the UK, and it will also be available through one of Anochrome’s European sites, Anocote Polska in Lancut, Poland.
Created by Modumetal, NanoGalv represents a breakthrough in zinc nickel corrosion resistant plating. The next generation technology redefines corrosion protection by using nanolaminate technology to create ultrathin, nano scale zinc nickel layers that dramatically enhance durability, longevity and environmental sustainability.
NanoGalv is applied through controlled electrochemical deposition at nanometer scale, creating extremely resilient sublayers that offer ultimate protection.
The technology will be initially available from the Anochrome Ltd and Anocote Polska companies within the Anochrome Group through either barrel or rack application.
NanoGalv is specified and can be used in numerous industries, including oil and gas, as well as renewable energy, rail, automotive, aerospace and defence.
Steve Norman, Anochrome Group Commercial and UK Divisional Director, said: “We are absolutely delighted to add NanoGalv to our offering. We first came across NanoGalv when we saw claims that 10,000 salt spray hours could be achieved if a part is coated in 10 microns plus with nano laminate layers of zinc nickel.
“That is unheard of in our industry, so we were astonished that the claims stood up to scrutiny in our tests. We knew we had to make it available to our customers in the UK and Europe.
“NanoGalv has been well used in the oil and gas sector in the past, but we see many opportunities for wind energy, rail, defence and aerospace. Many industries operating in the harshest environments can benefit from superior corrosion protection.
“We look forward to sharing the multiple advantages with our customers.”
Each NanoGalv nano-layer is applied at 300-700 nm thick – more than 100 times thinner than a human hair.
The total target coating thickness consists of multiple individual nanolaminated layers, giving it impressive strength.
Peter Messing, Business Development Manager Europe for Modumetal, said: “Parts coated with NanoGalv have an average lifespan three times greater than those treated with standard zinc nickel, meaning less material usage and reduced maintenance. In some circumstances, lifespan can be extended by four or five times.
“If parts last longer and require less maintenance, that can make a huge difference. In oil and gas, for example, it costs huge amounts of money each time a replacement flange or bolt is required on a remote platform.
“Furthermore, NanoGalv is Modumetal’s contribution on global sustainability efforts, in saving critical raw materials and energy by producing less critical waste.
“At Modumetal our goal is to develop partnerships with the potential to grow, and we are delighted to join forces with the Anochrome Group.”
NanoGalv has a good ductility beyond traditional electroplated ZnNi components, with no coating flaking when used on spring steel, spring-head-fasteners, rivets and tubes, while the risk of hydrogen embrittlement is also reduced.
The coating is PFAS free and eliminates the need for hexavalent chromium based coating systems, reducing reliance on hazardous substances.
Treated parts can be coated to a deep black appearance as well as silver.
